These geological features frame the city’s suburban sprawl extending westward toward the Nepean River. To the west beyond Western Sydney’s 5,800 sq km area—the nation’s third-largest economy after Sydney CBD and Melbourne—lie the Blue Mountains. Rising to 1,180 meters, this dissected sandstone plateau offers a distinct landscape from Sydney’s coastal plains. Peak visitor season runs December to February, with Australia Day fireworks drawing over a million people to the harbor on January 26.
