About Sydney

Sydney is a city defined by contrasts: a dense central business district set against the expansive Cumberland Plain, a 2,750 sq km area of flat Triassic shale and sandstone. These geological features frame the city’s suburban sprawl extending westward toward the Nepean River. To the west beyond Western Sydney’s 5,800 sq km area—the nation’s third-largest economy after Sydney CBD and Melbourne—lie the Blue Mountains. Rising to 1,180 meters, this dissected sandstone plateau offers a distinct landscape from Sydney’s coastal plains. Peak visitor season runs December to February, with Australia Day fireworks drawing over a million people to the harbor on January 26.
